Challenges faced by organisations in employee motivation
Human resource is the most valuable asset
owned by a company. Future of the company depends on how employees work towards
achieving the goals of the organisation. To achieve the goals, organisations
always try to motivate their employees. Most of the companies spend a
considerable amount of their profits for various kind of motivation programmes (Ramlall, 2004).
Motivation is
a state of mind. High motivation leads to high morale and greater production. A
motivated employee gives his best to the organization. He stays loyal and
committed to the organization (Juneja, n.d.)
If motivation
process is not successful it will be a cost of thousands of rupees. Demotivated
employees will bring negative impact to the organisation. Sometimes it will
lead to the downfall of the organisation. (Veer, 2015)
When an organisation
initiates a motivation programme, organisation will face many challenges. Some
of them are
- Diverse
Workforce
Workforce of an organisation is a changing one because employees
have different kinds of goals and employees have varied thinking. Hence
organisation is not in a position to prepare motivational programme which will be
suitable for a diverse workforce.
- Employees
motives cannot be observed
Even though organisations carefully prepared
their motivational programmes, employees with same qualification and experience
may show different results because motivation factors differ from employee to
employee
- Continuous
changes in the job role of the employees
Due to organisational policy employees face
continuous changes in their job role and due to that staff have to bear a heavy
workload. That will demotivate him even though organisations intention was to
motivate the employee.
(Juneja, n.d.)
If any organisation happens to overcome above challenges, motivation process will still not be achieved as expected due to the following problems occur from the employees.
I. Low self confidence
If employees have a good confidence in
themselves, it will enhance their motivation. Confident employee always tries
to complete his or her tasks and achieve their goals. If employees have low
self-confidence he or she will not perform well and will not be a successful in
work force
II. Fear to fail
If employees fear to fail they will not accept new
challenges. They will always try to avoid challenging tasks.
III. Lack of expectation in success
If employees have intention or positive expectations to
be successful in what he is doing, it will motivate the employees. But
employees who lack expectation in success will not accept future challenges.
And most of the time such employees ty to demotivate other employees too.
IV. Low interest in work
If employees have low interest in what they are doing,
they will not be motivated. Even though organisations may invest thousands on
such employees, the results may mostly be negative.
V. Lack of clarity
When employees do not have an idea about what he is
doing or why he is engaged in that work, same will demotivate him or her
(Veer, 2015)
In addition to above mention obstacles followings
also affect failure in the motivation process
I. Poor management style
II. No proper appreciation for achievements
III. One way communication
IV. An inconsistence approach toward employees .
